Our History
In the late 1980s, the Mora De León family saw the educational needs of the rural area of Quetzaltenango, so they decided to found a Spanish school in 1990, which would be the starting point for several projects focused on supporting rural schools and libraries.
Teaching Spanish to foreign students and volunteering made projects a reality such as: Financial support for rural schools and donations of books for the creation of bilingual libraries, special education and health care services for rural communities, literacy for abused women, and reforestation and recycling projects.
Thanks to our organization, Kie Balam had the great honor of being the training site for international electoral observers during the Guatemalan elections of 1996. That same year, a vegetarian restaurant called "Café Q" was founded, which would finance, together with Kie Balam, projects that would benefit people with limited resources, nursing homes, and orphanages. After 31 years, we are grateful and proud that our mission has benefited many people from various municipalities in Quetzaltenango, Totonicapán and Quiché.
Our largest projects have brought education to places such as: Granja Penal Cantel, Men's Prison, Women's Prison, Nuevos Horizontes, Women's Shelter, Jerusalem Home, Xelajú Special Education School and Escuela de la Calle (EDELAC).
We believe in education as the most effective tool to lead our society to progress. And we will continue to contribute our grain of sand for a better Guatemala.
